Plant trees, monitor survival: Minister to staff

The Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Kalaveti Ravu, was impressed with the well-maintained forestry nursery at Korotari in Labasa and the climate-smart agro-forestry initiatives led by the station.

A climate-smart agroforestry demonstration plot was recently established in preparation for the upcoming International Day of Forests (IDOF) celebrations on March 20.

Mr Ravu who was on a familiarisation tour in the Northern Division last week, was briefed by senior staff at the Forestry Department about the operations in Savusavu, Korotari and Labasa.

He urged the staff to work hard and with a passion to serve the people in the division.

Also at Korotari, Mr Ravu and senior staff in his ministry planted trees to support Fiji’s landscape restoration programme, which is to plant 30 million trees in 15 years.

He went on to say that while planting trees was vital, it was equally crucial to ensure their survival. The Minister commended the staff for the work they had been doing and urged them to abide by the law, work guidelines and ethics at all times.

In Taveuni, Mr Ravu handed a farmer from Bouma Village the earnings of raising tree seedlings to support Government's tree planting programme. A similar hand over was done for the youths of Nayarabale Youths from Vaturova, Cakaudrove on Friday.
