Indian Community Plant Mangroves to Observe Independence Day

Staff members from the Indian High Commission, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and members of the Indian diaspora planted mangroves in Suva today in observance of India's 77th Independence Day (marked on August 15 annually).

As part of their celebrations, the team included a planting activity to support Fiji's reforestation efforts in response to the increasing impacts of climate change.

One of the celebrations' activities was the planting drive. The theme this year is "Nation First, Always First," and it's a big part of the "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebration as a whole.

The seedlings were purchased by Waicoka Village Community Nursery in Tailevu, supporting the Ministry’s community empowerment programme.

India continues to support tree-planting campaigns as part of its close and comprehensive bilateral relations with Fiji, which are based on understanding, cooperation, and close ties between the two nations' peoples.

Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry, Mrs Atelaite Rokosuka, thanked the Indian Government, through the High Commission, and the Indian diaspora for their continued support of the Ministry’s landscape restoration programme.
