Nadroga / Navosa Province plants 5000 Trees a day

The Minister of Forestry Honourable Osea Naiqamu last week commended the people of Nadroga/Navosa province for grasping Government’s tree planting initiative and paving the way for other provinces in the country.

On Wednesday November 27th, 2019 a total of 33 villages in the districts of Naqalimare, Noikoro, Nasikawa, Namataku and Bemana with an estimated population of 10,000 people planted 5000 trees.

“This is the first province in Fiji to take this tree planting initiative in a big scale – congratulations and thank you Nadroga/Navosa,” Minister Naiqamu said.

Minister Naiqamu said that forests must be worth more alive and thriving than when they are indiscriminately burnt for short-term economic gain.

“Healthy forests act as a carbon sink thus capturing more than 20 per cent of the emission reductions required to hit our temperature goals.

Rehabilitating our forests can ensure that agricultural systems remain full of the soils and nutrients required to provide food security.”

The 5000 trees planted by the Nadroga/Navosa Province last week will definitely reduce soil erosion and siltation and certainly offset some of our carbon output and help in our efforts to mitigate against climate change.
