ECE Week Tree Planting Initiatives Thrive Across Fiji
During the
nationally celebrated Early Childhood Education Week, the Ministry of Forestry
in Fiji played a pivotal role by facilitating tree planting initiatives across
various kindergartens on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. This initiative aims to
engage young minds in environmental conservation and foster a culture of
sustainability from an early age.
One notable event took place at Sunnysmiles Kindergarten in Navakuru Village, within the District of Wairiki in Cakaudrove Province on Vanua Levu. Lekima Tikoilau, the Ministry of Forestry’s Forest Guard Extension for Seqaqa, graced the occasion as the chief guest. It was a special moment for Mr. Tikoilau, whose five-year-old daughter also attends the kindergarten. To mark the significant day, Mr. Tikoilau, alongside students, teachers, and parents, planted 100 fruit trees. The fruit trees, sourced from the Ministry of Forestry’s Korotari Station, symbolized a commitment to nurturing both the environment and the young learners.
In the Central/Eastern Division, the Ministry of Forestry staff supported the Colo-i-Suva Kindergarten by providing 24 tree seedlings. Each student received a seedling to take home and plant, ensuring that the spirit of tree planting extends beyond the school grounds. The seedlings, predominantly fruit trees, will serve as a lasting reminder of their contribution to the environment.
Additionally, the same team facilitated tree planting at Tebara Adventist Kindergarten in Nausori. The children enthusiastically planted 15 fruit tree seedlings within their school compound. The event was further highlighted by the presence of Kesaia Ravia, Assistant Director of Forestry Operations for the Central Eastern Division, who delivered an inspiring speech about the importance of environmental stewardship.
These tree planting initiatives during Early Childhood Education Week not only celebrated the week’s significance but also instilled a sense of responsibility and connection to nature among Fiji’s future leaders. The Ministry of Forestry's efforts underscore the importance of early education in shaping environmentally conscious citizens and ensuring a greener future for Fiji.
