Ministry of Forestry Partners with Mataqali o Manukuira for Major Reforestation Effort on Koro Island
Nacamaki
Village, Koro Island– The Ministry of Forestry, in collaboration with members
of the Mataqali o Manukuira of Nacamaki Village on Koro Island, has embarked on
a significant reforestation initiative aimed at planting 10,000 pine seedlings
on their Mataqali land. This ambitious project is part of the Ministry's
Reforestation of Degraded Forests (RDF) programme.
The
initiative began following a request made by the Mataqali to the Honourable
Minister for Forestry, Kalaveti Ravu, during his tour of Koro Island in May
2024. The project reflects a strong community desire to restore and enhance
their local environment.
To date,
7,000 pine seedlings have been successfully planted, covering six hectares of
land. The remaining 3,000 seedlings are scheduled to be planted within the next
two weeks, completing the reforestation effort.
The RDF
programme, which funds this initiative, is designed to rehabilitate degraded
forest lands across the country. By restoring these areas, the Ministry aims to
combat deforestation, mitigate climate change effects and support biodiversity.
