Honourable Alitia Bainivalu Embarks on First Official Tour of Fisheries and Forestry Stations on Vanua Levu

The new Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Honourable Alitia Bainivalu, has undertaken her first official tour of various Fisheries and Forestry stations on Vanua Levu, marking a significant step in her tenure.

Today's visits included stops at the Nabouwalu Fisheries Station, Lekutu Fisheries Service Centre, Dreketi Hatchery, Dreketi Forestry Station, and a meeting with the staff from both the Ministry of Forestry and Ministry of Fisheries in Labasa Town.

During her tour, Honourable Bainivalu observed the operations and engaged with the staff, listening to their concerns and suggestions.

"One thing I have noticed from the issues raised by the officers is that some concerns are common across stations, particularly the need to upgrade office spaces and provide staff quarters. I will definitely look into this," she stated.

The Minister emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, noting that taking care of the staff is crucial for the effective and efficient performance of their duties.

At the Dreketi Forestry Station, the need for additional staff was highlighted due to the significant workload, primarily driven by logging activities by Fiji Pine Limited. The station currently has four staff members managing ten operators, and the request for two additional staff members was made to better handle the operations.

Honourable Bainivalu stressed the importance of firsthand experience, stating, "As the minister responsible, it is very important for me to visit the offices under my ministry. If I am asked about a certain project or area, it is important that I have been there and can speak about it from firsthand experience."

The Minister's commitment to addressing the needs of the staff and improving their working conditions was clear.

"I have reminded the heads of the two ministries about the importance of taking care of our staff. These are the people on the ground, carrying out the work for us, so it is crucial to address their needs to help them perform their duties effectively and efficiently," she said.

She assured that upon her return to the office, discussions would be held to find a way forward.

Tomorrow, 17th July 2024, Honourable Bainivalu will attend the Bua Provincial Council Meeting, continuing her engagement with communities and stakeholders.
