The Ministry of Forestry, Fiji recently hosted the first-ever Mahogany Exporters Forum, engaging major exporters in a collective effort to enhance the industry's growth. This forum, the first of its kind since 2010, brought together 16 exporters from the Western and Central divisions, marking a significant step towards collaboration within the sector.
During the event, participants shared their experiences with mahogany exports, providing valuable insights into current industry practices. Discussions centered around the grading and specifications of mahogany logs and timber, which play a critical role in maintaining export standards.
The forum also addressed the challenges faced by exporters, identifying key constraints and exploring practical solutions. An important agenda item was the formulation of a National Mahogany Export Association, which would serve as a unified voice for the industry, enhancing coordination and strengthening the sector's global competitiveness.
