6,000 Mangrove Seedlings Planted in Ra for Fiji's Blue Carbon Project

This week, Ministry of Forestry, Fiji team in Rakiraki along with Conservation International Fiji(CI) and villagers of Barotu Village in the Saivou District of Ra Province, successfully planted 6,000 Bruguiera Mangrove (locally known as Dogotu) seedlings at Navitilevu Bay, Blue Carbon Site 3.
This tree-planting initiative at Navitilevu Bay is part of the Blue Carbon Project led by Conservation International, which aims to restore coastal ecosystems.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Forestry team, which provides technical expertise and support in forest restoration; the Conservation International team, which oversees project coordination and ensures alignment with environmental conservation goals and the communities of Saivou District, who actively participate in tree planting and the sustainable management of the restored ecosystems.
This partnership is designed to strengthen environmental sustainability while engaging communities in hands-on conservation efforts, underscoring the importance of local involvement in natural resource management.
Furthermore, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Conservation International, in partnership with the Government of Fiji and key stakeholders, including the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network (FLMMA) and Matanataki are spearheading a Blue Carbon pilot project in Fiji.
The initiative seeks to enhance mangrove management and restoration across three priority sites, while simultaneously identifying policy and financing pathways to secure the long-term protection of Fiji’s mangroves.
